Why pronunciation deserves dedicated attention
It's tempting to treat pronunciation as something that will simply sort itself out through exposure, and to some extent that's true — but Greek has a small number of specific sounds and patterns that English speakers consistently get wrong even after months of study, simply because English doesn't have a close equivalent and nobody explicitly corrected the habit early on. The five-way "ee" sound
One of the first things that trips up learners reading Greek text is discovering that five different letters and letter-combinations all produce an identical "ee" sound (as in the English word "see"):
- η (ita)
- ι (giota)
- υ (ypsilon)
- ει (epsilon + giota combination)
- οι (omikron + giota combination)
All five are pronounced exactly the same way in modern Greek. This is a spelling quirk inherited from Ancient Greek, where these letters and combinations represented genuinely different vowel sounds that gradually collapsed into one over roughly two thousand years of sound change — the pronunciation simplified, but the spelling never did. Chi (Χ χ): the "loch" sound

Double consonants that aren't doubled in speech
Greek spelling sometimes includes doubled consonant letters (ββ, λλ, σσ) inherited from older spelling conventions, but in modern spoken Greek these are pronounced exactly the same as their single counterparts — there's no lengthening or emphasis added by the doubling, unlike in Italian, where doubled consonants genuinely are held longer in speech. θάλασσα (thálasa, sea) is pronounced with a single, ordinary "s" sound despite the double σσ in the spelling.
Consonant cluster combinations
A handful of two-letter combinations in Greek produce a single sound different from what you'd predict by pronouncing each letter separately:

Vowel combinations that form a single sound

An easily overlooked detail is that the stressed syllable of a Greek word can shift when the word takes on a plural ending, a case ending, or a possessive suffix, rather than always staying on the same syllable the way it might in a language with fixed word-initial or word-final stress. άνθρωπος (ánthropos, person) stresses the first syllable, but its plural άνθρωποι keeps the stress in the same place, while other words shift — αδελφός (adelfós, brother) stresses the last syllable, and its plural αδελφοί also keeps the final-syllable stress, but many other noun patterns do move the stress toward the front of the word as endings are added or removed. Regional and generational accent variation
Standard Modern Greek, based broadly on the Athenian dialect, is what's taught in courses and used in national broadcasting, and it's the sensible target for a learner to aim for.
