Why "Rizes"
Ρίζες (rízes) means "roots". It's the idea behind the whole site: real, lasting Greek that becomes part of how you think and speak, rather than a stack of memorised phrases that fade the first week you stop actively reviewing them. Roots also fits the audience — a large number of people learning Greek today are doing it precisely because of roots of their own: family history, a Greek-Australian household, or a plan to reconnect with a heritage that's always been there in the background.
What Rizes Hub actually covers
The site is organised around the four real reasons someone ends up here, rather than a single generic curriculum:
- Learn Greek — the alphabet, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversation, for anyone building genuine fluency from the ground up.
- Travel Greek — the phrasebook-level Greek that gets a trip through the airport, the hotel, the restaurant, and the unexpected moments in between.
- Greek Exams — a genuinely researched guide to the exams that matter, including the Ellinomatheia international certificate and the specific HSC and VCE pathways for students in Australia.
- Study & Work — both directions: studying or working in Greece as an Australian, and the real, ongoing demand for Greek speakers within Australia itself, particularly in aged care and community services.
Alongside these four sections sit the practical tools — a searchable Dictionary, browser-based Flashcards, and a Verb Conjugator covering common regular and irregular verbs — built to be used directly, not just read about.
Who this is built for
Rizes Hub is written for complete beginners, for heritage speakers who grew up hearing Greek but never formally studied it, for students working toward an HSC or VCE result, for anyone weighing up whether to pursue Greek citizenship by descent, and for professionals who've found that Greek is a genuinely useful, employable skill in fields like aged care, community services, and translating and interpreting — particularly in Australia's large and long-established Greek-speaking community.
How the content gets made
Every guide on this site is written to be genuinely useful on its own — not padded out to hit a word count, and not a thin rewrite of what's already easily findable elsewhere. Where a page makes a factual claim about visas, exams, or official processes, it's grounded in current official sources (the Centre for the Greek Language, NESA, VCAA, NAATI, and Greek government migration guidance, among others), with the honest caveat that rules like visa fees and processing times change, and the relevant official body is always the final word, not this site.
What's still being built
Rizes Hub is under active development. The database and admin tools behind the dictionary, flashcards, and blog are already in place, and new content is added section by section rather than all at once, so that what's published is complete and properly researched rather than rushed. If something looks unfinished or a link leads somewhere still under construction, that's a temporary state, not an oversight.
